A new Realtor.com analysis finds that a record 25.2 million adults under 35 live with their parents in 2025, surpassing the previous pandemic-era peak. The figures indicate that roughly one in three young adults aged 25 to 35 are living at home, a shift attributed to housing affordability rather than weak employment prospects.
The data also shows that the increase is not limited to people without work. About 70% of those young adults living with their parents are employed, and many have college degrees. Taken together, the reported pattern points to independent living being delayed due to the cost of renting or buying homes.
Both sources describe the trend as part of a broader affordability problem that keeps young adults from moving out, even when they have jobs. The analysis emphasizes that while labor market conditions remain a consideration, the dominant factor highlighted in the data is housing cost pressure.
