A new heatwave affects much of France, with temperatures forecast to approach 40°C later in the week. Although summer officially begins on Sunday, the country is already experiencing its second heatwave of 2026 after an unusually hot period in May. Meteo-France says the conditions are widespread, long-lasting, and intense, expected to continue into next week and peak on Sunday or Monday, including in Paris. A quarter of the country, including Paris, is placed on orange alert, with some areas facing additional orange warnings on Friday. Authorities urge residents to be very cautious and to drink plenty of water.

The heatwave disrupts transport and education. SNCF cancels 71 long-distance trains between Thursday and Monday, citing concern about possible air-conditioning failures during very high temperatures. Schools in parts of the country suspend classes or adjust schedules; in Paris, around 10 middle schools have modified arrangements for Thursday and Friday. Some local officials say they may close schools if temperatures reach extreme levels.

Reports also mention at least one death linked to the heat, and scientists warn that heatwaves across Europe are becoming more frequent and intense, attributed in part to climate change.
