Mumbai customs officials arrest a pharma company director and a customs broker for allegedly attempting to export a controlled substance to the Czech Republic without required narcotics clearance. According to reports, the Special Investigation and Intelligence Branch (SIIB) of Mumbai Customs, working with the Airport Special Cargo unit, seized an export consignment dated June 1 filed on behalf of a Navi Mumbai-based pharma firm. The consignment was examined on June 17 after it was flagged as potentially containing controlled substances. Officials found a white-coloured powder weighing 3.05 grams that matched what was declared on the shipping bill.

The substance is identified as Phenylacetic Acid (and its salt), which is listed under Schedule B of the NDPS (Regulation of Controlled Substances) Order, 2013. Exporting such substances requires prior permission (NOC) from the Narcotics Commissioner of the Central Bureau of Narcotics. The exporter allegedly did not produce any such NOC or authorisation at the time of examination, and the goods were seized on the reasonable belief that they were being exported in violation of the NDPS Act.

Authorities record statements from the director and the broker. The investigation is also looking into the roles of other supply-chain participants, including the supplier and logistics intermediaries.
