Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist group that is proscribed in Nigeria, announces it has suspended Nnamdi Kanu from holding the offices of IPOB Leader and Director of Radio Biafra. Multiple outlets report the decision follows a full-house meeting of IPOB’s Directorate of State on Wednesday, during which the leadership reviews intelligence reports related to communications attributed to Kanu while he is held at Sokoto prison. IPOB says the suspension is intended to safeguard the organisation and prevent what it describes as unchecked actions and unguarded statements that it links to violence and deaths of members. The group also states that it will now oversee IPOB affairs through its Directorate of State, rather than through a single individual, and that any criminal activity carried out under the suspended offices will no longer be attributed to IPOB. One report also references earlier claims that Kanu dissolved the Edoziem-led Directorate and appointed a new administration, which IPOB disputes in its clarification of the Directorate of State’s authority. The reports describe IPOB’s DOS as an apex leadership structure that has operated under different heads since its establishment.
