China marks the Dragon Boat Festival on Friday, June 19, 2026, the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. Across mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, the public holiday is observed with traditional activities including dragon boat races, lion dances and other cultural events. The festival is widely associated with the ancient poet Qu Yuan; local legends say he drowned himself after political defeat, prompting people to search for him by boat and throw food into the water, practices that are linked to the modern races and to eating zongzi.
In several locations, teams compete in decorated dragon-shaped boats guided by synchronized drumming. Zhenyuan County in southwest China’s Guizhou province hosts boat racing and also features a tug-of-war variant on the water. Other reported festivities include a golden dragon parade in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, created using a chain of bamboo rafts and drawing spectators along a 500-meter route.
Families also prepare and eat zongzi, sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves and typically filled with ingredients such as pork, red beans, dates, or egg yolks, alongside cultural events like folk performances and traditional arts.
