UNICEF says a Gaza ceasefire declared more than eight months ago is becoming a “deadly illusion,” as children continue to be killed despite claims of a halt in fighting. Speaking in Geneva, UNICEF spokesman James Elder said that since the ceasefire was announced—reported as being declared in October 2025—265 Palestinian children have been killed. He described the figure as “absurd and devastating,” saying a child is being killed on average every day for more than eight months. Elder said many deaths occur outside active combat areas, including in homes and schools, and during everyday activities such as playing football or fishing.
UN reporting cited by UNICEF also points to continued Israeli strikes. According to Gaza’s health ministry, Israel has killed at least 992 Palestinians since the ceasefire was declared; the UN says it considers these figures reliable. UNICEF also reported that more than 400 children have been injured in that period, many with serious wounds, and that hundreds of children urgently need medical evacuation. The UN spokesperson tied the ongoing killings and injuries to restrictions on essential medicines and to political will, arguing that the situation should not be treated as normal.
