Enugu State Government orders a restriction of human and vehicular movement across six Local Government Areas in the Enugu North senatorial district ahead of Saturday’s by-election to fill a vacant seat, conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The state government’s public notice, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, says movement is restricted from 6am to 4pm on election day in the six LGAs and 102 electoral wards. The government states the measure is intended to support a peaceful, orderly and credible election, and it directs security agencies to enforce compliance. Exemptions apply to INEC officials, security personnel, accredited election observers, media practitioners, and other persons authorised to perform election-related duties.
The police command had earlier announced a different restriction timetable. Enugu State Police Commissioner Mamman Giwa says movement will be prohibited from 12am to 6pm within the same six LGAs. The police also indicates that the restriction does not apply to electoral officials and verified essential duties, citing the same goal of maintaining order and ensuring the election proceeds peacefully.
