Barbados mourns the death of Sir Charles Emile Straker, a prominent cultural figure and co-founder of the island’s well-known group The Merrymen. Multiple outlets report that Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley leads tributes, describing his passing as a “national loss.” Straker is remembered as The Merrymen’s lead vocalist and guitarist, with a voice and songwriting credited with helping define Barbadian music and capturing “Bajan life” through songs such as “Beautiful Barbados,” “Nut Seller,” “Big Bamboo,” “Sam Lord,” and “You Sweeten Me.”
The Jamaica Observer report says Straker dies at age 90, and that the cause of death is not disclosed. It also notes he was knighted in 2019, and that he published an autobiography in 2023 titled “My Island and Me.”
Sources describe his influence beyond local audiences, including performances for visitors and tourists and helping shape Barbados’ cultural presence internationally. The tributes extend to his family, including his children, grandchildren, relatives, and bandmates, as well as friends and fans.
