The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Eminent Persons Group (EPG) says it will schedule a visit to Haiti “as soon as possible” to hold in-person meetings with Haitian political and civil society stakeholders and government officials. The group says it continues to closely monitor Haiti’s evolving political situation while maintaining regular virtual engagements with a wide range of stakeholders in Port-au-Prince, including representatives from government, political parties and civil society.
The EPG is chaired by former Saint Lucia Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony and includes former Jamaica Prime Minister Bruce Golding and former Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie. CARICOM established the EPG in May 2023 to broker dialogue and help Haitian stakeholders navigate what it describes as severe political, security and institutional crises. Its mandate includes facilitating Haitian-led solutions by bringing together stakeholders to work toward a peaceful transitional framework aimed at free and fair elections, while also supporting efforts to combat gang violence, restore public order and improve citizen security.
The announcement follows a visit to Haiti by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who said the country’s transition process is moving forward and urged continued international support for peace, security and dignity.
