Three Democratic U.S. senators ask the Federal Communications Commission to prevent the Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery merger from closing until a review of foreign ownership and national security issues is completed. In a letter dated June 18 to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, Sen. Cory Booker, Sen. Adam Schiff, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren argue the FCC has an obligation to ensure the transaction does not proceed while the relevant government assessment remains pending. The senators’ request focuses on the timing of the foreign investment review of parties involved in the deal.
The proposed merger is described in reporting as a $111 billion transaction between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. The senators contend that closing the deal before the foreign investment review concludes could undermine the purpose of the regulatory and security process. While the FCC has not indicated whether it will take action, the letter calls for the commission to use its authority to delay the closing until the review is finished, aligning the transaction’s implementation with the outcome of the pending assessment.
