In Borno State, troops under the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, repel coordinated attacks by suspected ISWAP fighters on military positions and carry out counter-offensive operations. The Daily Post Nigeria reports that the attacks target military formations in Buratai, within Biu Local Government Area, and were repelled by troops of Operation HADIN KAI, according to a statement by the acting military information officer, Captain Mohammed Goni. Nigerian Eye reports a separate but related incident in which ISWAP launches a night attack on the 120 Task Force Battalion in Gonori, with attackers advancing from the Mandunari axis around midnight on May 9, 2026. Nigerian Eye says troops detect the movement early, engage the attackers in a coordinated defensive operation, and prevent any breach of the defensive perimeter. It further reports that the operation expands into a joint ground and air assault, with air platforms supporting strikes against retreating insurgents. Nigerian Eye adds that troops recover signs of heavy casualties and recover weapons and ammunition at the scene, while wounded soldiers are said to be in stable condition and follow-up operations continue to track and neutralise fleeing fighters.
