In Borno State, troops under the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, repel coordinated attacks by suspected ISWAP fighters on military positions and carry out counter-offensive operations. The Daily Post Nigeria reports that the attacks target military formations in Buratai, within Biu Local Government Area, and were repelled by troops of Operation HADIN KAI, according to a statement by the acting military information officer, Captain Mohammed Goni. Nigerian Eye reports a separate but related incident in which ISWAP launches a night attack on the 120 Task Force Battalion in Gonori, with attackers advancing from the Mandunari axis around midnight on May 9, 2026. Nigerian Eye says troops detect the movement early, engage the attackers in a coordinated defensive operation, and prevent any breach of the defensive perimeter. It further reports that the operation expands into a joint ground and air assault, with air platforms supporting strikes against retreating insurgents. Nigerian Eye adds that troops recover signs of heavy casualties and recover weapons and ammunition at the scene, while wounded soldiers are said to be in stable condition and follow-up operations continue to track and neutralise fleeing fighters.

Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East) under Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled a fierce night attack by ISWAP terrorists on a military position in Borno State and immediately launched a counter-offensive that inflicted heavy casualties on the fleeing insurgents. The attack targeted the 120 Task Force Battalion in Gonori, with terrorists advancing from the Mandunari axis around midnight on Saturday, May 9, 2026. Troops detected the movement early and engaged the attackers in a coordinated defensive operation. According to a statement by the Media Information Officer of Headquarters, Joint Task Force (North East), Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, the terrorists were overwhelmed and prevented from breaching the defensive perimeter. No part of the camp was breached and no equipment was lost. The operation quickly escalated into a joint land and air assault as air platforms from Operation HADIN KAI and the Nigerian Army Aviation were deployed to support ground troops. The air component delivered precision strikes on the retreating insurgents, sealing their defeat. Exploitation of the general area revealed extensive blood trails, body parts, and other signs of heavy terrorist casualties. Several terrorist corpses were recovered in the vicinity. Weapons and ammunition recovered from the scene included one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), two PKT machine guns, five AK-47 rifles, and several belts of assorted ammunition. The Army stated that wounded soldiers are in stable condition and receiving treatment, while follow-up operations continue to track and neutralise fleeing terrorists. Operation HADIN KAI described the successful repulsion and counter-offensive as further proof of its operational dominance and the futility of continued terrorist aggression against well-prepared troops in the North East Theatre.
