Quebec public health officials say the province’s raccoon-associated rabies outbreak is still growing, with new cases spreading into areas south and east of Montreal. Officials warn that the risk is continuing to expand beyond previously affected zones.

The province reports 76 rabies cases in 2026 so far, with the year only partway complete. That figure is compared with 93 cases recorded in all of 2025, suggesting a higher pace this year. Across a longer window, officials also report 104 cases over three years, indicating the outbreak has persisted and remained active.

The updates come as health authorities continue monitoring regional spread and alerting the public to the importance of avoiding contact with potentially infected wildlife and following guidance after animal exposures. Authorities are also tracking how the situation evolves geographically around the Montreal area as cases increase.
