A Federal High Court in Kano sentences Raya Haruna to 10 years’ imprisonment for transporting arms and ammunition to bandits operating in parts of Northern Nigeria. Justice Simon Amobeda delivers the judgment on Friday after finding her guilty on a three-count charge. The charges relate to the unlawful transportation of firearms and logistical support to criminal elements, and they are brought under Nigeria’s Firearms Act and the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

According to the court, Haruna is arrested in 2024 during an operation aimed at disrupting the supply of weapons to bandits terrorising communities in Kano State and nearby areas. She remains in custody from the time of arrest.

In its findings, the court states that while she does not directly carry out attacks, her role as an arms courier supports and sustains bandit and terrorist activities by serving as a link in the supply chain. Justice Amobeda orders that the recovered arms and ammunition be handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS). The court also directs that the convict participates in rehabilitation and reformation programmes during incarceration. The 10-year terms run concurrently from the 2024 arrest date, with no option of a fine.
