RM, leader of the K-pop group BTS, is named the first global ambassador of South Korea’s National Museum of Korea, the museum announces. The Seoul-based institution says it selected the singer, whose real name is Kim Nam-joon, for his long-standing interest in Korean traditional culture and art, as well as his support for preserving cultural heritage. The museum also points to RM’s donations of 100 million won (about US$65,000) in both 2021 and 2022 to the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation, which works to preserve and restore Korean cultural assets abroad. Multiple reports describe the role as part of the museum’s efforts to promote Korean history and traditional culture to international audiences. RM is expected to take part in promotional activities for the museum in addition to serving as its global representative. Separately, one outlet notes RM plans to hold a special exhibition of works from his personal collection at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco in October. RM is quoted as saying he will do his best to help more people appreciate the value of Korean cultural heritage, while the museum director expresses hope the appointment will strengthen global engagement with the museum’s mission.
