Apple releases iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 to eligible iPhone and iPad models after more than a month of beta testing and the delivery of release candidates to developers. The update arrives nearly two months after iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4. iOS 26.5 brings end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS messages in the Messages app, but the feature is in beta and depends on supported carriers. Apple says encryption works when both participants use carriers that support the newer RCS feature, and encrypted RCS messages show a small lock symbol. Apple also notes that traditional SMS does not have end-to-end encryption, while iMessage already does.

In Apple Maps, iOS 26.5 adds a new “Suggested Places” section that recommends locations based on trends nearby and the user’s recent searches. The update also includes groundwork for localized ads in Maps, which Apple has said are planned to start later (with the U.S. and Canada referenced in Apple’s announcements and reporting), though ads are not live immediately.

Apple adds a Pride Luminance wallpaper for iPhone and iPad, matching Pride watch-related artwork and offering a dynamic, customizable color design. Several sources also mention EU-focused interoperability testing for third-party wearables and additional security fixes.
