Iran announces it has closed the Strait of Hormuz, citing Israel’s continued attacks on Lebanon and accusing the United States of breaching commitments under an interim agreement meant to pause fighting on all fronts. Iranian officials say the closure is a response to what they describe as U.S. “bad faith” and an “unclear” fulfilment of its obligations, and Iran’s negotiating team proceeds to Switzerland for talks with the United States.
The planned talks are scheduled to start Sunday in Switzerland, with Pakistan acting as a key mediator and Qatar also taking part. Mediators say technical-level discussions begin in Bürgenstock, Switzerland.
While Iran warns that little progress is likely unless fighting stops, the United States disputes Iran’s claim that it controls the strait, adding that maritime traffic continues and U.S. forces monitor the area. State media report that Iran’s delegation includes senior political and government figures, including the parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and officials from the central bank and oil sector, among others.
