George Lucas will return to film in a voice role for Illumination and Universal’s animated feature “Minions & Monsters,” which is set to open in theaters on July 1. Multiple outlets report that Illumination founder and producer Chris Meledandri told Collider that Lucas voices a character in the movie. Meledandri says he met Lucas about two years ago and that their conversation was driven by Lucas’s interest in Illumination’s films, particularly “Despicable Me” and the Minions franchise. Lucas accepted the offer after Meledandri and others suggested the idea to the film’s creators. Details about the character and any specifics of Lucas’s part are not publicly disclosed. The film follows Minions as they make a monster movie in 1920s Hollywood and attempts to deal with monsters they have unleashed. Sources also note Lucas has not taken an on-screen acting role since 2007’s “Robot Chicken: Star Wars” cameo, and that he is now discussing additional work for the franchise, including the possibility of a role in a future Minions movie.
