Counter-terrorism police are investigating a series of incidents in Edinburgh in which five men aged 22 to 39 are injured, with the attacks reported to target Muslim men. Police say officers responded to multiple reports of a fast-moving sequence of events on Friday evening, including allegations of assaults in areas such as Sighthill, Telford Road and Leith Walk. Three of the men are taken to hospital, and police say none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. The Scottish Association of Mosques says two of the injured were reportedly attacked after attending prayers at their local mosque.
A 36-year-old white Scottish man is arrested in connection with the incidents and is charged, according to reporting from multiple outlets. Footage circulated on social media shows the suspect being restrained by officers while carrying knives. Statements from community and advocacy figures describe the victims as connected to local mosques and note that some had recently arrived in Edinburgh. First Minister John Swinney says he is “deeply concerned” and calls for no place for violence, racism or intolerance. Politicians and rights groups also condemn the violence and discuss possible links to Islamophobic hate, while police say investigation continues to establish the circumstances and motive.
