The Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Agricultural Protection Branch (APB) is warning residents to be cautious when buying beef after eight cows are reported stolen and illegally slaughtered in Clarendon. According to police reports, a farmer discovers around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday that his cows have been taken. The animals are later found slaughtered near the PJ Patterson Highway, around St Jago Road and Duke Street in the parish. No suspects have been arrested, and investigations are ongoing.
Police say the illegally slaughtered cattle did not undergo mandatory veterinary inspection that determines whether meat is suitable for human consumption. The APB warns that meat from such animals may pose a serious public health risk and should be treated as unsafe. Members of the public are encouraged to buy beef only from licensed and reputable vendors, including butchers and other meat sellers, as well as supermarkets and restaurants.
Authorities also urge people to remain vigilant for suspicious sales, particularly beef offered at unusually low prices, and to report concerns to the APB tip line, the emergency number 119, or Crime Stop.
