Wyndham Clark wins the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills on Sunday, overcoming a crowd he describes as hostile and making it through instances of booing and abusive heckling. Multiple reports say spectators appeared to root against Clark, while offering louder support to his playing partner, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, and groaning when Clark escaped trouble. Several outlets describe a tense atmosphere throughout the day, with Clark hearing boos during key moments and struggling to maintain calm amid a packed grandstand environment. The Guardian reports that several spectators are removed from the course after directing abusive comments at Clark, and the United States Golf Association confirms those removals. Other coverage also notes that Clark has talked about how unusual it is for fans to boo a player’s shots and indicates he found the crowd dynamics challenging during earlier rounds as well. Despite the resistance, Clark closes by tapping in on the 18th green to secure his second U.S. Open title in four years, finishing one stroke ahead of Sam Burns. Separate reports also state Clark issues a statement addressing the fan abuse he experienced during the final round.
