Abia State Government has ordered the prohibition of commercial motorcycle (“okada”) operations in the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia. The measures are announced by the state Commissioner for Information, Okay Kanu, and approved by Governor Alex Otti. According to the announcements, the ban takes effect from Monday, 22 June 2026. Officials say the decision is driven by security concerns and public safety, and is intended to strengthen security while improving traffic management and promoting a more organised transport system in the affected urban centres. Commercial motorcycle operators are directed to stop operations immediately within the designated zones. The state also states that security agencies will enforce compliance. It warns that anyone or any operator found violating the order may be arrested, and that the motorcycle involved may be confiscated in line with existing laws. Residents, transport operators and community leaders are asked to cooperate with authorities to ensure the directive is carried out.
