An ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing facility in Kannigaipair (Kannigaiper/Kannigaipair Village) in Tiruvallur district near Chennai leads to deaths and mass hospitalisation, according to multiple reports. At least two workers die, while more than 40 people—mostly migrant workers—are reported to have been taken to hospitals with breathing difficulty and other symptoms such as dizziness and vomiting. Times of India reports figures of 62 hospitalised, while other accounts describe “over 40” patients and cite ICU admissions at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai, with some patients in critical condition.

Emergency response includes evacuation and rescue operations carried out by a 30-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) unit from Chennai, which uses gas detection and rescue equipment. Reports also mention deployment of a specialised Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) response team.

The incident is attributed to ammonia leaking from a measuring valve or related equipment in the shrimp processing unit. The Tamil Nadu government orders a high-level probe: a committee of senior officials from industrial safety and health, pollution control, and public health, with instructions to submit an interim and final report within set timelines. Police register an FIR, and the owner of the unit is reported detained, while the state and governor express condolences and wish recovery to injured workers.
