The Union Government reappoints Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta for a fresh three-year term. Reports say the reappointment takes effect for three years, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. The Hindu, NDTV and Free Press Journal all describe Mehta as continuing as the country’s second-highest law officer and as the Union’s top legal representative in the Supreme Court.
NDTV and Free Press Journal note that Mehta has argued for the government in multiple significant matters involving constitutional questions, national security, electoral reforms, citizenship issues, taxation, digital regulation, and Centre-State disputes. Free Press Journal adds that the decision is approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) and is reflected in an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training on June 20, 2026, with the reappointment effective from July 1, 2026.
In a related move, the Centre also reappoints five Additional Solicitors General (ASGs) for another three-year term. Free Press Journal lists the ASGs and specifies start dates ranging around June 30, 2026 and July 1, 2026, depending on individual tenures.
