The Nigeria Society of Criminology (NSC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government to identify, arrest, and prosecute people involved in kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, and other violent crimes, as well as those financing such activities. In a statement issued after its recent deliberations on Nigeria’s worsening security situation, NSC members say action is needed against both the perpetrators and their sponsors to help restore peace and public confidence.
Prof. Olukayode Tade, a leading criminologist and NSC member, urged the government to “fish out” bandits and terrorists and prosecute them without delay. The group argues that although government efforts have been underway, the continued prevalence of these crimes suggests a need for more aggressive, intelligence-led approaches—particularly targeting the financial networks that sustain armed criminal groups.
NSC also recommends stronger inter-agency collaboration, improved intelligence gathering, and faster judicial processes to deter future offenders. It further points to longer-term measures aimed at root causes of criminality, including poverty, unemployment, and weaknesses in governance. The call reflects ongoing public concern amid frequent reports of attacks and abductions across multiple states.
