Qatar’s interior ministry and QatarEnergy report an “internal explosion” and fire at Ras Laffan Industrial City, a major LNG processing hub north of Doha. The incident occurred on Sunday evening during the start-up/restart of operations at the complex, which includes the Barzan local gas supply facility. Qatar’s officials describe the cause as a “technical malfunction” or “operational error,” and they say there is no leakage that threatens safety. QatarEnergy states that emergency response teams were deployed immediately and that the fire is brought under control.
Casualty figures reported by Qatar’s authorities rise over the day. One outlet cites at least 54 injured, with 18 missing. Another reports 13 deaths, including Indian and Pakistani nationals, and also says 66 people were injured. India’s and Pakistan’s embassies confirm their nationals are among those killed, while stating they are coordinating with Qatari authorities.
Some reporting links the restart to work following earlier damage from Iranian strikes in March that reduced Qatar’s LNG export capacity and forced shutdowns. Qatar Energy and officials say the Sunday blast does not affect exports or local gas requirements, and they report no environmental impact.
