US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer travels to India to advance the next phase of US-India trade negotiations after an interim deal is widely described as nearing completion. The Office of the US Trade Representative says Greer is in New Delhi to meet India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and other senior officials to discuss the “historic” US-India joint statement and the interim agreement, as part of broader US-India Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) talks. The visit follows earlier negotiator-level discussions in New Delhi in early June and is set against statements from US officials that the agreement is close to being finalised.
India’s side also frames the talks as focused on resolving “final hurdles” and putting final touches on the framework for an interim BTA, with expectations for key steps soon. US statements linked to the process describe the interim agreement as the first phase toward wider market access on “reciprocal and mutually beneficial” terms. Separate reporting also notes that after India, Greer is scheduled to travel to Uzbekistan for meetings focused on achieving fair, balanced and reciprocal trade with the US.
