Ambuja Cements, an Adani Group company, is partnering with UK-based Leilac Limited to develop a commercial-scale low-carbon cement project at its Sanghipuram plant in Kutch, Gujarat. The companies plan to test carbon capture technology alongside hybrid electric heating systems to reduce emissions from cement manufacturing. Ambuja says the approach is designed to lower coal use and enable a greater role for alternative fuels and renewable electricity in its production processes.
The project is described as a commercial demonstration using Ambuja’s Sanghipuram facility, which has a capacity of about 6.6 million tonnes per annum. Ambuja and Leilac state that if the technology works as intended, it could be scaled up substantially and could capture more than 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
The partnership is presented by Ambuja as part of its broader decarbonisation strategy and as support for its SBTi-validated net-zero target for 2050. The company also highlights its expanding use of green power, including nearly 1 GW of captive renewable generation, as a foundation for future lower-carbon manufacturing efforts.
