Ambuja Cements, an Indian cement company, partners with the UK-based Leilac Ltd to set up a low-carbon cement demonstration project in Gujarat’s Kutch region, according to multiple reports. Leilac’s technology is described as targeting lower greenhouse-gas emissions and reduced fuel use during cement manufacturing. The approach is also intended to increase reliance on renewable electricity to power key parts of the process. The technology is designed to cut coal consumption significantly, with some accounts stating it could be reduced to zero, and to allow more flexible use of alternative fuels. One report adds that if the demonstration project is successful, the operation could be scaled up by about seven to eight times. This expansion is linked to the potential to capture more than one million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. The initiative is presented as a pathway for future larger deployments of the technology within the cement sector in India, subject to performance results from the Kutch demonstration.
