Malaysia’s anti-graft agency is investigating the relocation of three elephants from Taiping Zoo in Perak to Tennoji Zoo in Osaka, Japan, after public complaints and allegations that funds connected to the transfer may not have reached Malaysian authorities. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) says it has opened a formal investigation into the movement of elephants Dara, Amoi and Kelat. The case follows the transfer carried out earlier in the year, which drew public anger and scrutiny over claims of mistreatment. MACC’s inquiry focuses on whether Malaysia received the money associated with the move, according to reports describing claims that Putrajaya did not receive the funds. Separately, one account of the relocation says the elephants were moved in March under a 25-year conservation and research agreement between the two zoos. The investigation is now underway, and MACC has not provided details on any specific findings or individuals responsible.
