Nigerians stranded in South Africa protest outside the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria over delays in government-led repatriation flights. Protesters gather on Monday to seek updates on their scheduled return, saying the evacuation process has moved slowly after they registered for voluntary repatriation following xenophobic attacks in the country. Organisers and community representatives say some people have been left destitute while waiting, with claims that documentation has been cancelled as a result of registration issues.

The Nigerian government’s foreign affairs minister, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, previously tells Nigerians in South Africa that no citizen willing to return will be abandoned as a June 30 deadline approaches, set by anti-migrant groups for undocumented foreigners to leave. That statement comes after the first government-led evacuation of 258 Nigerians from South Africa. Authorities had also said additional repatriation flights would return more Nigerians, with a second flight initially scheduled for June 15 but later postponed. Protest leaders call for the timing of subsequent flights to be clarified and for more rapid airlifting before the end of June.
