A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday replayed a video of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai’s interview on Arise Television during the trial over alleged phone-tapping. The prosecution case is brought by Nigeria’s State Security Service (SSS). As the second prosecution witness, human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju told the court that the recording accurately reflects what he witnessed on the programme aired on February 13. Adeyanju said El-Rufai claimed that someone intercepted a telephone conversation involving National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and that the information related to alleged plans to arrest him. Adeyanju recalled that reports circulating on February 12 suggested El-Rufai might be arrested or invited by security agencies after his return from Cairo, Egypt, and he said he urged El-Rufai to cooperate.
He also stated that he appeared on the same Arise TV edition and delivered his segment after El-Rufai, describing some of El-Rufai’s statements on air as untrue or half-truths. Adeyanju said the SSS invited him after the broadcast and he made a formal statement confirming El-Rufai’s account that “someone tapped and gave him the information,” while clarifying he did not know how the interception occurred. The defence raised no objections to the video and related exhibits. The case is adjourned until Tuesday, June 23.
