Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju testifies on Monday before the Federal High Court in Abuja in the ongoing trial of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, who is charged with alleged breach of national security. Sources report that Adeyanju appears as the second prosecution witness before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik after a court subpoena is issued. Prosecutors say the case stems from comments El-Rufai makes during a television interview, where he alleges that he intercepted a telephone conversation involving the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. El-Rufai reportedly claimed the alleged conversation included directives for security operatives to arrest him after his return from Cairo, Egypt, on February 12.

During his testimony, Adeyanju tells the court that reports circulated on February 12 suggesting El-Rufai could be arrested or invited for questioning. He says he appeared on an Arise Television programme on February 13 shortly after El-Rufai’s interview aired, and he confirms that a replayed recording of the interview accurately reflects what was broadcast. Prosecutors tender an interview flash drive and related compliance documentation as evidence. Adeyanju also recounts telling the court he did not have knowledge of any alleged phone hacking and says he testified only because he was summoned. The court adjourns proceedings to June 23.
