The United States says Iran attempted to bring individuals with alleged links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) into the country as part of Iran’s delegation for the 2026 World Cup. Markwayne Mullin, the US Secretary of Homeland Security, makes the claim in an interview with Fox News. Mullin says the US accepted 53 members of Iran’s national team delegation for entry, while denying others listed for travel due to what he describes as “direct ties” to the IRGC and because they were not part of the delegation’s usual travel group. He also links the heightened scrutiny to US efforts to vet people seeking entry, describing the measures as expanded after US authorities began conducting more extensive checks.

Mullin does not provide further details about the specific individuals denied entry, but he says one person Iran identified as the president of the soccer federation was prevented from boarding a flight. Iran’s Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran rejects the allegation, calling it “an outright lie” and denying that any federation representative attempted to board a flight. The claims come as US–Iran tensions remain high as the World Cup proceeds in venues across North America, including US-hosted matches involving Iran.
