The South-East Progressives Forum (SEPF) criticizes Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi over a defamation case he initiated against former spokesman Kenneth Okonkwo. In a statement released Monday and signed by SEPF media lead Paul Anigbogu, the group accuses Obi of trying to intimidate and silence Okonkwo after he left Obi’s political camp to back another presidential candidate. SEPF also frames the move as inconsistent with democratic principles and freedom of expression, and argues that Obi is overly sensitive to criticism.

According to the reports, Obi’s lawyers—led by Alex Ejesieme, SAN—sent a pre-action notice to Okonkwo on June 9, 2026. The notice accuses Okonkwo of making malicious and defamatory remarks about the NDC presidential candidate and demands withdrawal of the allegations, payment of N5 billion in compensation, and a public apology within seven days.

Okonkwo, through his own lawyers, says he will not retract his statements, maintaining that he spoke after receiving briefs from NDC aspirants who he says were defrauded and extorted by the NDC caucus linked to Obi. SEPF also cites Obi’s past threats of legal action against critics, including media organizations and lawyer/activist Deji Adeyanju.
