Kwara State, Nigeria, is recording the reported abduction of an Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) leader and two associates in Oko-Irese, Irepodun Local Government Area. Multiple outlets identify the abducted person as Bayo Fabiyi, described as an OPC coordinator/leader, who was travelling with a driver and another associate. The reports say Fabiyi was on a mission to deliver ransom and other items demanded for the release of an individual previously kidnapped in the same community.
According to the accounts, the team was carrying about ₦30 million along with additional goods, including five motorcycles and three bags of rice. The sources describe an ambush by armed men/bandits, after which the victims were taken away. One report also states that the abducted ransom target may have been killed before the ransom team arrived, although this is presented as information unknown to those on the mission.
There are also mentions of uncertainty around the incident’s details and whether it was promptly reported. When contacted, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, says the command was not formally informed of any kidnapping involving an OPC member at the time, and that police will investigate after receiving a formal report.
