A midday shooting in Montreal, Canada, on Monday left three people dead, including a police officer, a civilian resident, and the alleged gunman, according to local authorities and multiple international reports. Police say they received a call reporting an active shooting in the Cote-des-Neiges area around 11:30 a.m. Officers responded and a crossfire followed, with the suspected assailant firing from inside a building using a long gun. Montreal police chief Fady Dagher said one male officer was killed and another female officer was seriously wounded, but her life was not in danger. Police also said the shooter was killed.
The incident occurs in a partly Jewish neighbourhood that includes kosher markets and restaurants. Online speculation quickly focused on whether the attack was antisemitic or terrorism-related, but officials declined to provide motive details and urged against speculation while an investigation is ongoing. Dagher said there were not yet indications about motive. Canadian political leaders, including Prime Minister Mark Carney and Quebec Premier Christine Frechette, expressed shock and said authorities should be allowed to investigate.
Police initially locked down the area and told residents to stay indoors, with the operation later winding down and traffic resuming.
