The Rivers State Police Command says it has arrested and detained police officers captured in a viral video that allegedly shows them extorting motorists. Multiple outlets report that the officers are attached to the Old GRA Police Station in Rivers State and were detained after the video and related social media reports drew public attention on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
According to statements cited by the outlets, the allegations include officers demanding money from motorists, with claims that they targeted specific vehicles, including those with tinted windscreens, and demanded bribes starting from ₦100,000. One report names ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey as being among those accused, and it also references allegations made by a social media activist who said the officers operated near the Rivers State Government House and close to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s residence.
Rivers Police leadership described the alleged conduct as inconsistent with police ethics and professional standards. The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered the arrests, continued detention, and immediate investigation, and indicated that any officers found guilty would face appropriate disciplinary action.
