The Presidency, through Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications Sunday Dare, criticises Peter Obi for urging President Bola Tinubu to resign from office. In a statement published on Dare’s official social media page, Dare argues that Obi’s position conflicts with Nigeria’s constitutional presidential system, which предусматри fixed terms for elected presidents. He says the country does not operate a parliamentary model in which governments can be removed through votes of confidence. Dare also responds to Obi’s reasons for calling for resignation, which include worsening economic conditions, insecurity, and allegations that Tinubu has not met campaign promises. The Presidency maintains that disagreements should be pursued through Nigeria’s democratic and constitutional processes. Dare further says Obi’s approach focuses on criticism without offering practical alternatives, adding that national leadership requires maturity, balance, and adherence to constitutional principles. The statement characterises Obi’s demand as reflecting what it calls a misunderstanding of the constitutional framework governing the presidency, and questions why Nigerians should trust a presidential candidate who, according to the Presidency, does not demonstrate respect for the foundations of the office.

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, has criticised Peter Obi over his recent call for the President to resign from office. In a statement posted on Dare’s official social media page, he said Obi’s demand was inconsistent with the provisions of Nigeria’s constitutional presidential system, which provides for fixed terms of office for elected presidents. The presidential aide argued that Nigeria does not operate a parliamentary system where governments can be removed through votes of confidence. “Nigeria is a constitutional presidential democracy. Presidents are elected for fixed terms and leave office through elections, constitutional processes, incapacity or the expiration of their mandate,” Dare stated. Obi had earlier urged President Tinubu to resign, citing worsening economic hardship, insecurity and what he described as unfulfilled campaign promises. Reacting, Dare maintained that Obi’s position reflected what he described as a misunderstanding of the constitutional framework governing the presidency. “It raises a troubling question: if a man seeking the presidency cannot demonstrate respect for the constitutional foundations of the office, why should Nigerians trust him with that office?” Dare said. The presidential aide further accused Obi of focusing primarily on criticism of the government while failing to acknowledge areas where the administration claims progress has been recorded. According to him, national leadership requires more than criticism and should involve the presentation of practical alternatives and solutions. “A serious national leader acknowledges both challenges and progress. A serious leader offers alternatives,” he stated. Dare also argued that Obi’s recent public interventions have increasingly centred on highlighting challenges facing the country. He maintained that the office of the president requires what he described as maturity, balance and adherence to constitutional principles. The statement added that political disagreements should be pursued within the framework of Nigeria’s democratic and constitutional processes.
