The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says it is proceeding with an increase in operational tariffs for airport cab operators and a vehicle upgrade requirement at Nigerian airports. FAAN responds to concerns raised by private cab operators under the Nigeria Union of Private Cab Operators (NUPCO), who had threatened to stop services at Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed Airport and Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport if FAAN did not reverse what they described as anti-operator policies. FAAN says the vehicle standards directive targets improvements in reliability, comfort, safety and passenger satisfaction, arguing that airport taxi services should use “clean, roadworthy” vehicles suitable for a modern international airport environment.
On tariffs, FAAN says the operational charge had remained at N500 for more than eight years despite inflation and rising maintenance and economic pressures. It therefore adjusts the tariff to N1,500.
FAAN also details the compliance timeline: operators were notified in July 2024, and FAAN has already granted multiple extensions, moving the deadline to June 2026 and considering a further final extension to October 2026. FAAN states no further extensions are expected after the proposed final deadline and emphasizes that its regulatory relationship is with registered cab companies rather than unions or associations.
