The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Oyo State says public schools will remain shut until the state government improves security measures. The union’s position follows the abduction of more than 40 students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, an incident that also resulted in the killing of two teachers. NUT officials say the ongoing insecurity has created fear and psychological trauma among teachers, learners, and other education stakeholders, and that some parents are reportedly withdrawing children from schools.

NUT states it has not ended the closure because the victims’ captivity has remained a concern and because security around schools is not yet considered adequate. The union says it instituted an indefinite strike and has held meetings with government officials, submitting a communiqué and action plans. Among the proposals are increased patrols in vulnerable areas, especially those bordering forests, and the creation of joint task forces involving conventional security agencies, hunters, and vigilante groups.

NUT also outlines conditions for calling off the industrial action, including the safe rescue of all abducted persons and implementation of measures intended to prevent a repeat of the incident.
