Senator Garba Musa Maidoki, who represents Kebbi South, leaves the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joins the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Multiple reports say the defection follows unresolved disputes within the APC after recently concluded primaries in Kebbi State. Maidoki cites lingering internal tensions and alleged injustice during the primaries as reasons for his move. He also says he believes the ADC provides a better platform to pursue the interests of his senatorial district and Nigeria. According to reports, Maidoki’s letter announcing the defection is read on the Senate floor by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin during plenary. Jibrin disputes Maidoki’s characterization of an “internal crisis” in the APC, saying there is no crisis and offering to intervene with party stakeholders to reconcile the senator, suggesting the issue may be related to other disputes. The reports also indicate that Maidoki previously resigned from the APC ahead of the party’s senate primary election, citing similar internal problems within the party. Maidoki remains a sitting senator, serving as chairman of the Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance and vice-chairman of the Committee on Information and National Orientation.
