Senate President Godswill Akpabio urges all senators to attend Wednesday’s plenary session as the National Assembly prepares to vote on a proposed constitutional amendment to establish state police across Nigeria. Speaking during an emergency Senate session on Tuesday, he frames the State Police Bill as a major reform to decentralize policing and improve security management at the grassroots level. Akpabio says the change would provide a legal basis for state police while safeguards against misuse would be addressed through later legislation and regulatory oversight. He also argues that local communities, including local governments, traditional and village leaders, youth groups and other stakeholders, are better positioned to identify threats and support intelligence gathering, enabling quicker responses.
Akpabio directs the Senate Committee on Constitution Review to submit its report on Wednesday to allow immediate legislative action. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele echoes the call for full attendance, saying constitutional amendments require at least two-thirds of senators to support the vote. The Senate adjourns plenary until 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24 for debate and voting on the bill.
