The Vatican reiterates that, in Catholic Mass, sermons are limited to ordained clergy and cannot be assigned to women or other laypeople. In a response to a proposal from German bishops, the Vatican says the existing rule remains in force and cannot be changed. According to the Vatican statement, “the current discipline cannot be dispensed from,” meaning the practice of reserving preaching roles for ordained priests or deacons is treated as a settled requirement rather than a matter open to local modification.
The German bishops had suggested broadening who can deliver sermons, including allowing women and potentially other non-ordained participants. The Vatican’s reply rejects that request and maintains that only an ordained priest or deacon may preach at Mass. The decision reflects a continued emphasis on existing Church discipline regarding preaching responsibilities within liturgy.
