A member of Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team, Barrister Christopher Chidera, says Kanu dismissed Ifeanyi Ejiofor as counsel during Kanu’s terrorism trial for reasons he describes as professional failures and related conduct. Chidera states that Ejiofor had represented Kanu at the Abuja Federal High Court before Kanu later chose to represent himself in proceedings overseen by Justice James Omotosho. According to Chidera, after the Court of Appeal discharged Kanu on October 13, 2022, the Federal Government filed what he characterizes as an irregular “civil stay application.” He argues that the defence team failed to challenge the court’s jurisdiction to consider that application, which he says remained effective and allowed further proceedings. Chidera contends this contributed to a conviction at a lower level on charges that the appellate court had already quashed. He also alleges Ejiofor engaged in what he calls “character assassination” by spreading falsehoods about Kanu’s brothers, including communications said to have been made to Kanu’s wife, which he says affected family relationships and diverted attention from the jurisdictional issue. Chidera calls for transparency and says the Court of Appeal should address the jurisdictional irregularities at the core of the case.
