Eric Chelle signs a new contract to continue as head coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, the Super Eagles, while also taking charge of the U-23 Olympic Eagles. The update is confirmed by Shehu Dikko, chairman of Nigeria’s National Sports Commission, after meetings with officials of the Nigeria Football Federation in Abuja. Dikko says the discussions focus on long-term planning across Nigeria’s national teams, including continuity of coaching and a structured pathway for younger players into the senior squad.

According to reports, Chelle’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of 2026. Negotiations lead to revised terms, including improved remuneration and expanded support for his backroom staff, with benchmarks included in the agreement. Dikko explains that the added Olympic Eagles responsibility is not intended simply to increase workload, but to begin building for future competitions, particularly as Nigeria prepares for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Chelle is described as a Franco-Malian coach who previously led Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. The dual role comes amid pressure following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the last two Olympic Games.
