Nepali mountaineer Dawa Sherpa says he spent about three days trapped inside a deep crevasse on Mount Everest before escaping, according to his account reported by multiple outlets. Sherpa, 57, describes being stranded approximately eight metres (25 feet) down in the ice crack with limited supplies, surviving on food such as biscuits and chocolates and eating chunks of ice. He says that back home in Nepal, his family had started to mourn his death, and that he himself had nearly given up hope of rescue.
Sherpa reports that his situation changed when an avalanche struck and thundered into the crevasse, filling it with snow. He was then able to use the newly formed snow to find a way out and reach safety. After the escape, Sherpa is recuperating in Kathmandu, where he gave what outlets describe as his first full account of the incident to AFP.
