Senate President Godswill Akpabio warns Nigerian governors not to abuse state police once the force is established. Speaking during plenary on Tuesday, he said the warning is directed at ensuring the new policing structure does not become a tool for misuse after governors leave office. Akpabio made the remarks as the National Assembly prepares to act on state police legislation aimed at addressing insecurity.

He linked the process to a constitutional change underway: President Bola Tinubu has sent a Constitution Alteration Bill to the National Assembly to enable the establishment of state police. The Senate is scheduled to consider and pass the state police bill on Wednesday. Akpabio also said the implementation would follow two phases—first through constitutional amendments and then through an Act of Parliament to define modalities intended to prevent abuses.
