Heavy rain in Mumbai causes waterlogging and disruptions as a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) sanitation worker falls into an open manhole in Gandhi Nagar during Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde’s inspection of rain-affected areas. The incident happens while Tawde is reviewing conditions and related drainage measures early on Wednesday, including areas such as Dadar, Hindmata, and Gandhi Market, according to reports. The worker is identified as a sanitation employee associated with the BMC. After the fall, Tawde reprimands officials on the spot and warns of consequences, including suspension of ward officials, if any manhole is left uncovered in their jurisdiction.
Tawde says the manhole cover had been temporarily removed to clear waste clogging the drainage system, and she points to signage and barricades intended to alert people to the hazard. She also states that multiple pumps are deployed to drain accumulated road water and that efforts are underway to clear clogged drains. The reports cite India Meteorological Department rainfall data for the 24-hour period to explain the widespread monsoon impact across multiple parts of the city.
