Noel Tata, 69, announces he will step down as chairman of Trent Ltd, ending nearly three decades of leadership at the Tata Group’s flagship retail company. He tells shareholders at Trent’s 47th Annual General Meeting on June 23 that it will be his final AGM as chairman. Tata is scheduled to turn 70 in November, which aligns with Tata Group internal governance norms, including retirement age rules for executive and non-executive directors.
According to reporting on his tenure, Tata joined the Trent board in 1998 and later took on executive responsibilities as the company’s first managing director in June 1999. Under his chairmanship, Trent expands its retail footprint over multiple categories and formats, adding stores and entering additional cities. The company’s annual reporting and figures cited across sources show growth from a single Westside store to a network of more than 1,200 stores across India, including formats such as Zudio and Star. Trent’s revenue is reported at ₹19,701 crore in FY26. With his planned departure, Trent is expected to move to a new leadership phase while building on growth platforms established during Tata’s long tenure.
