The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also known as the Shiite movement and led by Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, announces nationwide Ashura processions for Friday, 26 June 2026. The group says the commemorations mark the martyrdom of Imam Husain, grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. According to IMN statements cited by multiple outlets, the processions are scheduled for Friday, corresponding to Muharram 11, 1448 AH, and will take place in more than 600 towns and villages across over 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. One outlet reports that while the main processions hold on Friday, related religious rites associated with Ashura can be observed on Thursday, the 10th day of Muharram. The IMN describes Ashura as a symbol of justice and resistance against oppression, and links the timing of the observance to commemorations in Karbala, Iraq. The movement also says it will reaffirm its commitment to preserving Imam Husain’s legacy during the annual events. Previous years have seen occasional tensions with security agencies, though the group maintains the observances are peaceful religious activities.
